HUD Weighs in on Visitation Policies

HUD Weighs in on Visitation Policies

After more than a year of housing providers establishing visitation policies at affordable housing communities, HUD has weighed in on Fair Housing violations in property visitor restrictions based on age, disability, and familial status. HUD had previously said that when establishing visitor restrictions, housing providers could not infringe upon the civil rights of residents and could not restrict resident access to essential caregivers.

The new announcement of a complaint resolution reached by HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity goes further to say that property visitor policies cannot have a blanket restriction based on age, or a restriction that keeps residents from visiting with friends and family in their own homes.
