Course Description:

An updated version of the MDS 3.0 (version 1.18.11) will be implemented effective October 1, 2023, and the new MDS 3.0 data set is undergoing the most significant change to the RAI since the implementation of MDS 3.0 in 2010. This session will review key changes to the MDS item sets and how to accurately code any new or revised items as a critical first step in preparing for the changes. In addition, discussion will include key considerations for the overarching impact of the October changes on facility processes, including, but not limited to, the potential impact to reimbursement, and implications for the CAAs and individualized Care Planning, discharge planning, survey, SNF Quality Reporting Program (QRP), and the Five Star rating. This session will address understanding of the MDS 3.0 changes and action steps to take to effectively operationalize these changes within facility processes.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify key changes to the MDS and examine the intent of the changes
  2. Discuss strategies to implement changes to IDT processes to capture supportive documentation for the coding of the new MDS items
  3. Acquire knowledge to implement best practices to individualized Care planning and discharge planning utilizing the new SPADES and health literacy items.
  4. Understand the impact of the changes on the Quality Measure, SNF QRP, and Five Star Rating system

  • 180 min: In-depth review of the Changes to section A, C, D, G, GG, N, and O of the MDS
  • 30 min: Impact of the changes on the completion of the Care Area Assessments (CAAs) and Individualized care planning process
  • 30 min: SNF QRP
  • Overview of SNF QRP
  • Data collection and calculation of new measures
  • 15 min: Five Star Rating impact
  • Quality Measure domain
  • Staffing domain
  • 15 min: Payment implications under SNF PDPM
  • 15 min: Closing Comments/ Q&A
