Winter Driving Safety Tips

The Pacific Northwest is notorious for our ever-changing forecasts; this is no less true with our current blustery conditions.

Winter brings heavy precipitation, freezing temperatures and decreased visibility. It is especially important to be aware of these conditions if your employee’s essential job duties include commuting from one work site to another.

TEMPERATURE CHANGES AND TRAVEL HAZARDS

Whenever possible limit the amount your employee needs to travel to safely complete their assigned tasks.  Stress the importance of safety vs speed whenever possible and encourage your employees to report unsafe conditions.

Depending on the situation not all motor vehicles accidents are work related, if an accident is reported be sure to gather the following information.

  • Where/when was the accident?
  • What was the purpose of the trip?
  • What was the intended route?

PRECAUTIONS

With the increase in driving snow and rain as well as dense fog it is essential that you ensure all company vehicles have been properly maintained to include changing wiper blades, checking all internal and external lights, fluid levels and tire pressure.

Remind employees to take extra caution while driving due to unknown road conditions, it’s ok to be a little late with adverse weather.

Provide a place for employees to dry off and warm up.

You should also confirm the emergency and roadside assistance kits are properly stocked to include: blankets, emergency rations, water and road flares.

Advise staff to stay aware of their surroundings and watch for obstacles when visibility is poor, it is ok to pull off the road if they are uncomfortable with the driving conditions.
