COVID-19 Fears Have Some Washington State Nursing Homes Refusing Hospital Patients

Long-term care facilities have been slow to take hospital patients, causing hospital backups with worrisome rippling effects.

SEATTLE — IN Washington state, which was once America’s COVID-19’s epicenter, familiar complaints about the scarcity of equipment and tests are prompting a new concern: hospitals can’t discharge patients to nursing homes and long-term care facilities.

Those facilities in Washington – and much of the country – have been unable to secure the masks, gloves and gowns necessary to prevent the virus’s spread inside their walls. Lacking the equipment needed to keep staff and residents safe, the centers have been slow to take hospitalized patients ready to be discharged.  Article
