Research Finds No Real Link Between Nursing Home Quality and COVID Infections and Deaths

Tamara Konetzka, University of Chicago Biological Sciences and Medical School, joined the LeadingAge update call on Thursday, January 7.  She has found that there is no meaningful relationship between star ratings and the incidence of COVID infections or deaths.  COVID in a nursing home is entirely connected to what’s going on in the community around the nursing home.  “When people ask me what nursing homes can improve related to COVID,” she said, “I respond – that is the wrong question.  A better question is what can the wider community do to better tamp down community spread.”

Here’s an article with the information Tamara discussed on today’s Update Call.  Here’s a link to one of the studies she talked about.
