Census 2020

Census 2020

As you know, 2020 is a census year. We have received several questions from members regarding census enumeration among our residential providers. We have reached out to the Census Bureau for more information, but here is what we know:

Nursing facilities, skilled nursing facilities, and inpatient hospices are all considered “group quarters”. We are awaiting information from the Census Bureau about whether Assisted Living residences also count as group quarters and how Life Plan Communities should be counted.

The Census Bureau will contact group quarters in advance to gather information that will assist in the enumeration process. This advance contact will occur in 3 phases:

Phase I – On January 14 (today), the Census Bureau will mail a letter to the administrators of group quarters. We are awaiting information on how administrators are identified and what a group quarter administrator should do if they do not receive a letter.

Phase II –February 3 – March 6, the Census Bureau will contact group quarters administrators to gather preliminary information and to schedule an in-person interview for enumeration if needed.

Phase III – February 21 – March 6, census workers will visit group quarters with which they were unable to establish contact during Phase II.

More details to follow.
