CMS Issues Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 Skilled Nursing Facility Prospective Payment System Final Rule

CMS Issues Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 Skilled Nursing Facility Prospective Payment System Final Rule

CMS has released the final FY 2023 SNF PPS rule. Highlights include a two-year phase-in of the PDPM parity adjustment. This means that combined with the market basket increase, SNF PPS rates will see an increase. Skilled nursing facilities will see an increase of 2.7% in their payments. Overall this is an increase of around $900 million for FY 2023.

CMS also addressed a long-standing problem related to the FSES for Life Safety Code compliance. Read more about the background on this problem, how CMS has addressed it in the final rule, and what this means for members in this article from expert consultants at Jensen Hughes.

Also, the final rule requires nursing homes to report on flu vaccinations through the NHSN.

We are still reviewing the final rule and will send out a more comprehensive review as soon as we are able.

For an overview from CMS, please check the CMS Fact Sheet. If you are interested in reading the Final Rule, you can view it on the Federal Register.

CMS will host a SNF Open Door Forum on Thursday, August 4 at 2pm ET. The FY 2023 SNF PPS final rule is on the agenda as is; recently revised long-term care surveyor guidance in Appendix PP of the State Operations Manual, updates to MDS and PBJ, and the CMS staffing study.
