JOB OVERVIEW: Responsible for the oversight and management of the Resident Care Department, including staff management, assessment and nursing care for all residents, remaining within budgetary guidelines, and maintaining compliance with all regulating authorities. Responsible for overseeing resident care department staff.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
• Observes nursing reports. Remains fully aware of all resident issues, complaints and the medical condition of each assigned resident.

• Assists unit staff in interpreting and planning daily assignments.

• Transcribes and implements provider orders when necessary and assures that physician phone orders and documentation is administered properly by reviewing T.O.s daily.

• Assists floor staff with assessment of resident conditions, emergencies and handling of unusual occurrence reports/investigations.

• Thoroughly reviews each resident care plan on a quarterly basis and writes a problem oriented summary addressing the resident’s goals/outcomes and evaluating the effectiveness of the interventions in place and making necessary changes.

• Monitors weekly weights of residents and addresses weight loss issues. Makes dietary referrals.

• Reviews unusual occurrence reports (UOR), investigates UORs, updates care plans and implements investigations that address the problem to prevent future reoccurrence. This includes abuse “red files”.

• Alerts DNS of all pertinent issues.

• Passes medication, gives injections and completes treatments as needed.

• Actively participates in wound care rounds and committees. Completes thorough wound documentation weekly that includes an evaluation of the interventions in place and needed changes.

• Completes infection control documentation.

• Maintains standards of nursing care and implements the policies and procedures of the nursing department. Assures staff is following the plan of care for each resident.

• Communicates and coordinates with therapies as needed.

• Participates in resident care conferences and is responsible for the formation of resident care plans and updates to reflect the current status of residents. Assigns monthly recaps of MD orders.

• Participates in “on-call” nurse manager duties in the rotation and as assigned by the DNS.

• Maintains documentation as required by law and the state nursing practice.

• Protects resident information and ensures resident/patient confidentiality.

• Submits CQI information each month to the CQI/Staff Development Nurse. Participates as a member of the CQI Committee. Reviews CQI summary each month and passes pertinent information on to floor staff. Participates in weekly IDT meeting.

• Assures that patient discharges are coordinated and efficient.

• Reviews restorative programs monthly and assures they are appropriate for resident.

PREREQUISITES:
• Current licensure to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Washington. A minimum of three years’ nursing experience is preferred.
• Knowledge of gerontological nursing and principles of nursing supervision.
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
• Able to communicate effectively in oral and written form in the English language.
• Ability to access information and communicate in an electronic environment including but not limited to the use of electronic medical records.
• CPR Certification.
• Ability to work in stressful and emergency situations.
• Skilled in interpersonal relationships.
