FEMA PPE AAMI Level 3 Gowns

FEMA PPE AAMI Level 3 Gowns

FEMA started sending the second shipment of PPE to Washington State Nursing Homes.  We received pictures of the second shipment, and it includes the blue plastic tarp-like gowns. FEMA did not include written instructions with the second order on use of the gowns, even though this was one of the communication changes they stated would be included in subsequent shipments. We were, however, sent a link to their training video for these gowns which was another communication change promised.  This video showed donning and doffing of the gown and other PPE.  After reviewing the video and having shared it with Pat Preston, MS, Executive Director, Center for Geriatric Infection Control, as well as Department of Health and DSHS/RCS, all are in agreement that there is risk for a barrier breach with the tearing of the perforated arms and a risk for contamination to the user and the environment when removing the gown, even if the user follows the FEMA instructions.  LeadingAge WA is, therefore, advising members to refrain from using the FEMA gowns.
