How to Transform Your Skilled Nursing Wound Care Program! Wound care continues to be a pillar of skilled nursing. As costs have risen and reimbursements have decreased, skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers need to transform the delivery of wound care to meet quality and economic hurdles necessary for success.

Objectives:

  • Recognize the components of the pressure ulcer/injury prevention program
  • Stage pressure ulcer/injuries according to the Required Reporting on the MDS
  • Participate in a wound type/tissues and stage reporting per Section M recognition skills lab

Objectives:

  • Recognize the most common wound etiologies: Need slides for pathophysiology of pressure ulcers/injuries?
  • DIME
    • Design an evidence-based wound management plan of care using the Wound Bed Preparation model
    • Describe the different methodologies and safety considerations for debridement
    • List infection prevention and control considerations during wound care
    • Recognize the major wound dressing categories
    • Describe functional wound edges and what may impair wound resurfacing from an edge perspective

Guest Speakers:

Dr. Pamela Scarborough, Director of Public Relations and Education, American Medical Technologies – Dr. Scarborough is currently Director of Public Policy and Education for American Medical Technologies, headquartered in Irvine, California. Her clinical career spans over 30 years, having practiced in a variety of setting including acute, outpatient, home health and long-term care. Her clinical experience has included traditional physical therapy, orthopedics and sports medicine, cardiac rehabilitation, and wound care. Pamela has published book chapters, articles, and monographs on the topics of diabetes and wound care, in addition to being a highly sought-after speaker, invited to present to interdisciplinary audiences at conferences and educational activities around the country. She holds an active license as a physical therapist in Texas and is board-certified as a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) and Certified Wound Specialist (CWS). In addition, Dr. Scarborough is certified by the Geriatric Section of the American Physical Therapy Association as a Certified Exercise Expert for Aging Adults (CEEAA). Pamela has served on numerous symposium planning panels and association boards over her extensive career. She is currently a co-chair for PRESENT Wounds, Ostomy and Continence and served in 2013 as Clinical Editor for Wound Source, a wound product publication from Kestrel Health Information. She is on the Editorial Board of Today’s Wound Clinic. When not traveling she enjoys a quiet, nature-filled life in the Texas Hill Country.

 

Ryan P. Dirks, MS, PA-C, Chief Executive Officer, United Wound Healing – Ryan became interested in caring for patients as a Physician Assistant with the goal of extending the hands of physicians and providing care in underserved areas. His passion for sports as an NCAA athlete and Olympic hopeful made sports medicine a natural fit. In 2011, he was introduced to skilled nursing wound care and felt a unique calling to provide specialty care in an often underserved area.
Today Ryan is the CEO of United Wound Healing, a mobile provider of wound care. His dedication to helping patients heal their wounds, along with his commitment to providing wound care education and support to clinical providers is second to none.
