Mental Health – Mental Disorders are biologically based brain disorders that can greatly interfere with a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and cope with the demands of life. Like cancer or diabetes, mental illness is a medical condition that may improve or worsen based on care and treatment. Individuals may behave or communicate in ways that seem confusing to you and others. During this training you will learn more about different types of mental illness and how to care for those individuals. We will cover topics like Trauma, Suicide, Communication and Crisis Management. We will also help to dispel the many myths and stigma related to mental illness.

This class satisfies the DSHS requirement for 8 hours of Mental Health Specialty Training.

Dementia – In the US, it is estimated that over 7 million people over the age of 65 have a form of Dementia. Learning about dementia allows you to create a deeper level of compassion and understand how to best meet the needs of your residents. During this training you will not only learn about the different types of dementia, but more importantly, how to best approach residents. As these diseases progress your approach needs to change too. We will address topics like hallucinations/delusions, trauma, visual and physical changes as well as more challenging topics like sexuality and negative behaviors.
